Great account of the history of Gibraltar. I couldn't put the book down. Loved it, absolutely loved this book. However, I wish I had read this book before traveling to Gibraltar. It would have made the trip more interesting. If you plan on a trip to southern Spain, include a trip to Gibraltar, but take the time to read this book, first. You'll not regret it. And, it will make your experience there so much more enjoyable knowing the history of this rock of limestone that the English have fought so hard to keep in their possession.Product details

Very interesting and readable.
Covers the complete history; Presents the facts and interprets the why's of what happened. A map or two would have been helpful. Sometimes the subjects and objects of sentences are presented in a confusing manner.
Good solid interesting history of a critical rock in the history of the world. Interesting and well written. I enjoyed this book.
An interesting book about a subject few people is aware of. The author tell the history of this rock from ancient times to the British occupation initiated in 1704. From that point on, the spaniards have shown their inability and incompetence, especially in the three years siege of 1781-83, to recover "la verja". For the British, to have this strategic piece of rock at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula has proven to be very useful along the years -- and they have made a great job for the place and the few thousands souls living there, in a way that its inhabitants prefer the Union Jack to these days. Here you can see the clear difference between two cultures and how it has shaped their histories.
Interesting, factual history of this fascinating piece of the planet. Not the most exciting writing you’ll come across and no one is going to be making a movie out of it, but if you want to understand Gibralter’s place in the world, why it still belongs to Britain and whether that’s a good thing or not, this is a good place to start.
