Gibbon's History of he Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire has withstood the test of time. Written between 1776 and 1788, Decline and Fall is unmatched in breadth of its subject and scope of its scholarship. Gibbon writes in a style that is accessible to all. He is not dry or pretentious. Yes, it is vast, but if you read through it you will have an education in the Roman Empire. But most importantly, you will have the yardstick with which to measure your own country's sojourn upon the path of history. You will have a history of the greatest and longest empire ever built and destroyed with which to judge ably and aptly where present civilization is on the scale of its own rise, decline and fall. So, if you would care to know the basic model of the cycle of civilizations rising, declining and falling, then Gibbon's History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire will give you that understanding.Product details

Engineering law Alexander Haring 9781176591127 Books Reviews
An excellent book; highly recommend it.
Much easier to read than the previous one. I just wish there were approx dates for us laymen.
I was looking for a book detailing said title subject, and ended up with a long biography of the writer, Edward Gibbon. There was too much of that to wade through to find salient facts, so I will have to seek alternative sources. P.
I've been plowing through this work for almost a year, now. Almost done!
It's fascinating, but not for the casual reader of history. Some of the footnotes added by the editor seem to make an attempt to refute Mr. Gibbon's surprisingly "modern" take on religion, but it can be overcome.
The reputation of the work speaks for itself. You absolutely can't beat the price on this item as opposed to the print copy; however, you get what you pay for. The work is replete with misspellings and the incredible number of footnotes are not easy to manage in the edition. The bio (included) of Gibbon is fascinating.
Thank you for the book.
I've wanted to read this book for years. I thought that listening to while driving would solve my problem. Nope. I cannot tolerate this reader. He is monotone and dull. It was not safe for me to be on the road while listening to this book. Eventually I would have been in prison for vehicular manslaughter caused by this book putting me soundly to sleep. I even tried giving it away. No one else could stand it either.
